If you are on a budget and want to teach yourself guitar, you will be equipped to make a good purchase after reading this article.
There are some differences in acoustic guitars that you will want to take into consideration. There are nylon string and steel stringed guitars. There are also 12 string guitars (the standard guitar has 6 strings). You will probably want to rule out the 12 string when looking for a cheap acoustic guitar. They are a breed unto themselves, not typically inexpensive, and not the best to learn on.
Your basic choice is between nylon and steel stringed guitars. The nylon string has a softer sound and is used predominately in Latin, Flamenco, and some jazz music, though it does show up in other varieties of music as well.

Next, sit with the guitar on your lap like you are going to play it. If you can't sit down for some reason, hold the guitar like you would play it, the point is to look down and see how close the strings are to the neck, so you're looking at the side of the neck.
Starting at the head, where the tuning pegs are, the strings should be very close to the neck, and the gap will widen a little as you follow the neck to where it connects with the body. This gap should not widen too much and it should not continue to grow. The gap should be about 3-4mm, 5mm at the most, where the neck meets the body.
Push down on the strings. You are testing the "action" of the guitar. A guitar with higher action will be harder to play, harder to push down the strings and get a good sound. A guitar with lower action will be easier to play. Action is something that can be adjusted, but not if the guitar itself is too poor of quality.
The last, but most important thing to check on the guitar is the tuning. Everything mentioned so far has an impact on the tuning, but there are other not so obvious things that can create tuning problems, and a guitar that won't tune or can't stay in tune is not the guitar for you.
A guitar can be tuned with a tuner, but when you play a chord sound out of tune. If this happens, it indicates a problem with the guitar and you should not consider buying it. You will want to know how to tune a guitar by ear and play at least one chord, or know someone who can, to be able to accurately check the tuning of the guitar you are considering for purchase. Most times the person selling the guitar should be able to tune it and know some chords. You might have them play it so you can hear it. But sometimes the seller does not play guitar.
One time I was helping a friend get a guitar for her child. She had found an ad on Craigslist for a guitar and asked me to go with her to look at it. The guy selling the guitar was selling several other guitars as well, and he didn't know how to play. He was importing cheap, poorly made guitars and selling them cheap on Craigslist.
He would use a tuner to make sure he could tune the guitars, but as soon as I picked up one of them I knew immediately it would never be a good guitar for my friends kid. The first chord I played sounded awful, so I started to tune the guitar. It proved to be a challenge, so the guy gave me the tuner he was using. I "tuned" the guitar with the tuner, but as soon as I played a chord it still sounded awful. This indicated the guitar was fatally flawed.
The moral is, the better educated you are before you make your purchase, the more enabled you are to make the best purchase you can on an inexpensive guitar.
If you can't learn to tune and play a chord before you buy a guitar, have someone you know can play go with you. If you can't do either of these, then when you're looking at the guitar ask the seller to tune it and play it for you. If the seller cannot do this, and you cannot do it or have a friend do it, then don't buy that guitar. Move on to the next seller. Trust me, you would rather not buy in that case, and wait if you have to, so that you can be sure you're getting the best cheap acoustic guitar you can.

How Do I Clean And Maintain My Bass Guitar?

The first thing to begin with before cleaning your guitar is clean hands. If you're getting dirt and fingerprints back on the guitar you're cleaning, you are not doing any good.

To clean the HARDWARE, all metal parts, which include, strap locks, tuning heads, and bridge. These parts could be kept clean using a soft cloth to remove dirt and keep them looking polished. If there is more of a build-up on the hardware, you may use a mild metal polish.

When cleaning the BODY of your guitar, you should always use a soft cloth and a polish specific for guitar and bass applications. I would not recommend using every day furniture polish as they may contain wax and solvents that may be harmful to the type of finish you have on your guitar. The NECK should also be cleaned in the same manner as the body of the guitar in most cases. Just be careful not to get any of the polish on to the fret board.

The best time to clean the FRETBOARD, is obviously when you are changing strings. The fret board should be cleaned at least every other time you have a string change. You should not apply lemon oil to a maple neck, as it can make the maple neck crack if you do it wrong. The woods that are used to make up the fret board are very susceptible to drying out. If you do not have a maple neck, apply good fret board oil with a clean cloth to the wood. After oil dries, wipe any remaining access oil from fret board.

The STRINGS can also be maintained by applying string cleaner to your bass or guitar string and then wiping them down with a dry cloth after every use. This helps to keep them lasting longer and sounding their best... You may also use a small amount of rubbing alcohol, just make sure you do not get any on the fret board or it may contribute to drying it out lose playing quality.

Guitar Lessons On Simple Chord Construction

It takes a minimum of three notes to make a chord, and any combination of three or more notes - however "discordant" they may sound together they can be considered as a chord of some sort.
Simple three note chords are called triads, two note chords are called an interval.
All chords convey to the ear two important musical statements.
The first is the, "Key or Tone center"; this is the principle note of the chord and it is the one on which it is built. For this reason, it is called the root note.
The second is the "harmony"; this is the effect produced by sounding the other notes in the chord relating to the root note.
It is the particular sound of the chord, that is determined by the intervals of the root note and the other notes.
Take for example the three E chords - E major, E seventh, and the E minor. All three of these chords have the E note as the root note, but each has a different sound and therefore a different use.
E major is a simple three note triad chord built from these notes, the E, G# sharp and B.
Now when you play the E seventh, you are introducing another note into the chord, a D.
This is what makes it sound different from the E major.
If you play the E minor you will notice how it differs from E major. You will find it quite distinctive and full of tone.
Both of these chords have strong sounds, and both are three note triads, but the E major chord has a stronger stable sound, whereas the minor chord is full but gives a sadder sound.
In each of these cases, it is the interval between the root note and the third note in the scale of the chord that determines whether it is a major or a minor chord.
If you look at the construction of the C major chord you will see exactly how a triad chord is made from just three notes.
The first note is on the B string in the top fret, the second note is on the D string in the second fret from the top, and the third note which is a C on the A string and is three frets down from the top.

Are you tired of struggling to fill your guitar teaching schedule with new students? This is a very common problem amongst teachers in the guitar teaching community. The reality is, you MUST know how to attract a lot of guitar students on a continual basis in order to make good money teaching lessons. However, this is NOT done by only advertising as much as possible. You need to clearly demonstrate to all potential guitar students that you are the number one choice for a guitar teacher in your local area.
These are the six things you need to do for/demonstrate to potential guitar students in order to get many new students very quickly:
1. Make it clear to potential guitar students that your guitar lessons are very unique and special when compared to any other lessons being offered locally
You will struggle to attract a lot of guitar students when your lessons are judged purely by price alone. When this happens, your students will view all guitar teaching as a simple commodity where the only point in working with one teacher over another teacher is to save a few bucks. In this case, they will always select whoever is cheapest. To overcome this objection, you must help them understand the major benefits they will get while working with you (that they cannot find anywhere else). Additionally, you must communicate to them that you will be able to offer them these things while simultaneously saving them time and money. The question is, how can you prove this? Here are a few ways:
Show any potential guitar students a list of the students you've trained to become excellent guitarists and musicians.
Explain how you've actually been 'trained' by an experienced guitar teacher trainer to get the best results for your students. Keep in mind that this is totally different than having a degree in music, since this kind of degree will not help you improve as a guitar teacher.
Don't teach exclusively one on one lessons - use a variety of unique formats that will bring your students tons of additional benefits and help them advance their playing faster.
Become the local expert a style your target students want to learn.

Here's a question you should never ask: "What is the greatest method for teaching guitar students?". The greatest, most successful guitar teachers do not merely teach 'guitar' they teach 'people'. What am I talking about exactly? Do not search for an all-encompassing teaching method. Instead, search for strategies that will help each of your students achieve their specific musical goals as quickly and effectively as possible (while keeping them highly motivated throughout the learning process).
3. Help your guitar students learn what they NEED (not just what they think they 'want')
You don't want to be that one guitar teacher who teaches his students only what they 'believe they should be learning.' It's very easy for students to distract themselves and stray away from their ultimate musical goals when they try to learn things that 'seem interesting', but have no real benefit for them. With this in mind, they will often try to convince you that they should be learning these kinds of things and this can be very distracting for you as well (if you allow it to be so). Truth is, the overwhelming majority of students have no idea what they should be learning and why they should be learning it. That is why they are the students and you are the teacher. You will attract many more guitar students once you turn your existing ones into truly great musicians. This only happens when they achieve their musical goals as quickly and effectively as possible, so don't let them get off course simply when they 'think' they should be learning something.
4. Work with a proven expert to improve your guitar teaching skills
#1 mistake made by most guitar teachers that ruins their local reputation (taking away their ability to earn good money): teaching guitar lessons with a trial and error approach. There is almost nothing worse than telling your students that you have learned how to teach guitar through trial and error. Many of them will take this as a sign of your own incompetence and will pursue lessons with someone else who seems more capable of helping them get results. Think about it. Would you pay someone to fill a cavity in your tooth if they were working on a trial and error basis? Would you sit down in that dentist's chair? Didn't think so! The same applies for your guitar students. They are not stupid, they can tell a hack teacher from someone who has really perfected the craft of guitar instruction. Don't overlook this point - find an expert guitar teacher who will show you exactly what you need to do to get the very best results for your students.
Chances are, you know that I offer training for guitar teachers. With this in mind, you may be under the impression that the only reason I wrote this article is to advertise this program... but it's not. Truth is, it really doesn't matter to me who trains you to become an excellent guitar teacher. I'm merely informing you that you need to do this in order to become successful in your guitar teaching business.
5. Enrich your students' musical lives by expanding their guitar playing goals to make them bigger in scope
In most cases, people who want to learn guitar from you either:
*Have no clue what can truly be accomplished with guitar. They have a very limiting understanding of how to set truly BIG goals.
*Don't have faith in themselves and as a result pursue very small goals based on what they think is possible rather than what they REALLY want to accomplish.
For instance, many of your guitar students might think that they merely want to learn how to play fast guitar licks, specific songs or styles. Fact is, if you showed them how much they could truly achieve, they would want to accomplish much more. Mediocre guitar teachers will simply help their guitar students learn songs, play cool licks or reach other small goals during their lessons. Eventually, the student will be able to do these things and will quit because there seems to be no reason to continue (since the teacher never made them aware of the greater musical possibilities beyond their basic objectives).
It is your job as a guitar teacher to open the minds of your students to a whole new dimension of musical possibilities. This will motivate them to continue working with you for a long time and tell everyone they know about your lessons. Make it a point to help your students build up their musical goals from very basic ones to bigger, more long term ones and help them grow into excellent musicians.
6. Truly care A LOT about helping your students (and show this to them!)
Once you prove that you truly care about helping your guitar students (more than any other guitar teacher could) you will be able to attract new students and keep them for very long periods of time. There are countless ways you can do this, however, to keep this article short I will only mention one: Rather than spending all the money you make teaching lessons on other things, use some of it to directly increase the amount of value your students get from having you as their teacher. Hold group jam sessions, parties, dinners or other events that can only be attended by your students. Do not charge them for this! Give it to them 100% free to let them know that they are part of something truly special and that taking lessons with you brings much more benefit beyond simply learning to play guitar. Most guitar teachers never do anything like this (making you really stick out in the crowd!).

Guitar blues and rock rhythms. Most forms of modern music are rooted in the blues genre of music. In fact the evolution from blues to rock is very relevant to the music played by modern guitar players.
In essence, broadly speaking any music played in 4/4 time based around simple chord progressions can be considered to have evolved around the blues method of playing.
When one begins to play modern chords and riffs it will become very obvious that there is an overlap where, country music, folk, rock, and jazz is concerned.
To explain simply, a slow blues is played by sounding the chord on the first beat of the bar. This sound is allowed to ring out momentarily, then repeated on the second beat.
The sound can be either dampened or cut off sharply so that the accent of the melody is heard.
When doing this, listen closely and you will hear how this method creates the tempo and the rhythm required for the particular piece of music.
Then the third and fourth beats repeat the first movement so that a back beat is the resulting tone.
This system of playing will clearly show the relevance to what I was saying about how close to blues all modern music is.
If a guitar player who seriously wants to learn crossover progressions in the genre of modern music, then it is important to understand how certain "riffs" sound.
Most common blues "riffs" are based on an alternating pattern played on dampened strings. What ever the tempo, this pattern forms the basis of the "shuffle" feel.
The shuffle beat produces the pick up effect of bass lines striking just before, and on each beat.
It should be remembered that a basic progression of riff, or chord action can be varied in many ways, and can often be used, for example, to vary the number of beats on each pair of notes, by playing each string individually, and or including the note on the fifth fret of the higher string and so on defining the rhythm of the music.
In a small blues band containing a drummer and a bass player, the simplest rhythm guitar patterns are based on one or two chords per bar, or on a steady repetition of a bass string riff.
This riff is usually played with down strokes, heavily dampened, and in time with the bass, and drum.
Obviously there is much, much more involved with guitar blues, and rock rhythms, which the serious guitarist would want to learn, but the above information will give an insight as to what one can do to improve their guitar playing.

Beginner Guitar Lesson - How to Play Wild Things

A great song for a beginner to play
The version of "Wild Thing" by the Troggs is an excellent first song for someone interested in starting to play the guitar. The song only has 3 chords, and they are usually some of the first chords a beginner guitar student would learn. The chords are A, D, and E. Also, we will implement an easy strumming pattern, so you can sound pretty good early on. Later, as you become more advanced, fancy strumming patterns will really impress those who listen to you play.
It was a big hit many years ago
Back in 1966, "Wild Thing" made it to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U. S. It also reached number 2 in Britain. Rolling Stone magazine listed "Wild Thing" as number 257 on it's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song certainly is fun to listen to, and makes a great beginner guitar lesson. It has been covered by many artists, including Jimi Hendrix, who gave an amazing performance of the song at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Even if this song isn't your style, it can be an excellent song to begin your guitar playing career with.
Learning about the guitar
As your holding a guitar, the lowest sounding string, the sixth string is located on the top. The next string down is the fifth string, and so on. Eventually you will get to the bottom string, which is the first string. Its also the thinnest and highest sounding string. The open sixth string is an E. The open fifth string is an A. The open fourth string is a D. The open third string is a G. The open second string is a B, and the open first string is an E.
The frets are the individual squares on the guitar fretboard. This is where you place your fingers when playing the guitar. A good place to start is the fret closest to the top of the guitar. This is called the first fret. There are dots located on the guitar fretboard. Each one represents different frets on the guitar. The first dot is on the 3rd fret, the second one is on the 5th fret, the third dot is on the 7th fret, and so on. Most guitars will have these dots.
Finger numbers
Just like the strings and frets on the guitar, we also assign a number to the various fingers of the left hand. The first, or pointer finger is number one. The middle finger is number two. The third finger, or ring finger is number three, and the pinky is number four. It is important to know finger numbers to properly place your fingers on the guitar.
How to play the chords
"Wild Thing" only has three chords. They are A, D, and E. The A chord is formed by placing your first finger on the fourth string, second fret. Your middle finger on the third string, second fret, and your ring finger on the second string, second fret.
The D chord is formed by placing your first finger on the third string, second fret. Your ring finger on the second string, third fret, and your middle finger on the first string, second fret.
The E chord is formed by placing your middle finger on the fifth string, second fret. Your ring finger on the fourth string, second fret, and your first finger on the third string, first fret.
The strumming patterns
Because this is a beginner guitar lesson, we will incorporate a simple strumming pattern for "Wild Thing". The intro has three chords. The A, D, and E.
1. Strum the A chord twice. Strum it straight down from the fifth string.
2. Strum the D chord twice. Strum is straight down from the fourth string.
3. Strum the E chord six times total. Strum it four times, then a slight pause, and strum it two more times. Strum all the strings when playing an E chord.
The verses contain the chords A, D, E, and D again. For simplistic purposes, strum each chord twice, straight down. Remember to start your strumming on the proper string, or you will get some strange sounds. There is another part of the song with the chords GAGA each strummed one time.
If possible, listen to the original recording to get a feel for the timing of the song. If you are a beginner, not everything is going to sound the way you want it. Playing guitar is not easy, especially early on. Keep practicing, and in time, you will start to sound like a pro.

Give Your Electric Guitar A Performance Upgrade

If you happen to be a keen guitar player and treasure your particular axe of choice, you'll no doubt at some stage have contemplated the most effective way to offer your guitar a performance upgrade. So what possibilities may be out there that won't involve butchering the guitar and are comparatively straightforward to undertake? You can buy a new ready-made nut in many different materials such as brass or graphite, or if you are handy with a file you may be confident enough to cut and file a new nut out of bone. The bridge and tailpiece is another area worthy of consideration. Quite often guitars come with cheaply manufactured versions from China or Korea and impressive gains can be had by utilising versions made from lightweight aluminium and other fancy materials.
